General Health Measures
In all matters of health, CBE takes direction from Alberta Education and Alberta Health Services. Find out how you can reduce the spread and lessen the impact of illness in school communities.
Routine Immunizations
The CBE supports the AHS school-based immunization program.
Attendance Line: 403-777- 6279 ext. 1
It is important that you call the school if your child is absent or arriving late. Please report all absences to the Attendance Line. Learn more on our Attendance page.
Illness
If your child is ill, please keep them at home until they are well enough to participate in all school activities. If your child becomes ill during the school day, we will contact you and you will be expected to arrange for your child to be picked up as soon as possible.
Illness at School
If your child becomes ill during school hours, the office will call parents/ family members listed in PowerSchool. We ask that you make arrangements to pick-up your child as soon as possible to ensure that we continue to keep our staff and other students healthy and well. Please make sure you have all emergency contact information updated.
Allergies
Please make sure that the office and your child’s teacher are informed of any allergies that may affect your child’s health and safety.
We are an allergy aware school. We ask that if your child has a severe nut allergy to please notify the school office. Children are reminded to only eat what they bring to school and not to share treats in case of allergies.
We would like you to be aware that we have a number of students in the school with severe allergies and would greatly appreciate your cooperation in helping us to ensure the wellness of these students. We cannot legally guarantee a nut-free environment so we must remind both parents and students about the possibility of nuts causing severe allergic reactions in some people. We encourage all to be sensitive to this issue. Children are also reminded to eat only what they bring and not to share treats in case of allergies.
Health Conditions
Inform your child’s teacher of any health condition affecting you child, for example: hearing, sight, allergies, diabetes, epilepsy, or needed medications. Medications to be taken during school hours require a signed Student Health Plan to be on file at the school.
Medication and Significant Health Concerns
If your child has special needs relating to allergies, asthma or other medical conditions, please provide the classroom teacher and principal with information relating to their condition and any treatment, medications, etc. that may need to be administered at school. A Student Health Plan must be completed at the school before any medications may be administered. This information needs to be updated on an annual basis or sooner if the condition or needs change throughout the year. A master file will be maintained in the office so that all staff who may be in contact with your child have quick access to any treatment information that is necessary. Please provide this information as soon as possible.
For the protection of all students, all medications must be secured in the school office, with the exception of inhalers and Epi-pens carried on the individual for life threatening conditions. In certain instances it may be prudent to have an Epi-pen or inhaler housed in the school office as well.
Medical Emergencies
Parents of students with serious or life threatening health concerns should complete the Student Health Emergency Response Protocol Form. This form allows all staff to be completely informed as to the correct course of action if a health crisis should arise while at school.
In the case of all medical emergencies, where possible, parents are contacted immediately. If your child requires immediate medical attention, an ambulance will be secured.
Injury
The safety of all children is extremely important to us! Safety rules and consistent expectations help us to ensure the well-being of students, staff and visitors. All of our staff members have First Aid training. Minor injuries will be dealt with at school and parents will be notified of any incident by a phone call. If a more serious injury occurs, parents will be contacted immediately and appropriate actions will be implemented.
Crisis Information
If there is a serious health problem or some other family crisis, please make sure the office is aware of the situation so that we may handle these matters sensitively and understanding.
Health Services
Health Services are provided to each school by a Public Health Nurse (PHN). The PHN will work with teachers to provide health services and education to the school, but are not on call to attend to medical emergencies or provide first aid unless by coincidence they happen to be on site at the time of the occurrence. If a child becomes ill or is injured during the school
day, school staff with first aid certification will provide first aid and assess the extent of the injury.
Sometimes a band-aid, ice pack and/or a rest are sufficient supports to allow the student to return to class. If students are presenting more serious injuries or illnesses (or experiencing significant discomfort), parents will be called to make arrangements for picking up the child. In situations where there is any doubt at all about the extent of the illness or injury or parents cannot be notified, an ambulance will be called to transport the student to a medical facility immediately.
Lice
There may be times during the school year when we have cases of head lice.
If your child has head lice, please contact the school and let us know. If your child has been exposed to lice at school we will notify you.
As a precaution, we ask all parents to check their child’s head frequently for a few weeks after any exposure. You can find more information on lice from myhealth.alberta.ca.
