Dear Royal Oak School Families,
Spirit Days: During the month of December, we would like to have some fun in building a sense of school community. Your child may participate in some or all of our special dress-up days.
· Thursday, December 11 -– Holiday Head to Toe (hats, headbands, toques, hairdos and festive socks)
· Friday, December 19 - Pajama Day
Gratitude's: Thank you to everyone who came to our School Council’s Winter Wonderland Family Dance Thursday night! It was wonderful to see our community come together and enjoy an evening of fun and connection. A special thank-you goes out to our dedicated volunteers and School Council members, whose hard work and planning made this event possible. We are grateful for your time, energy, and commitment to Royal Oak School.
Attendance and Lates: The Calgary Board of Education recognizes the strong positive correlation between attendance and a student’s success in school. Regular attendance sets students on the path to reaching their full potential. It is critical that parents, as partners in your child’s learning, understand that chronic absenteeism (missing 10% or more of instructional time) and chronic lates can negatively influence a student’s learning. Did you know?
· By grade 3, students with regular attendance are more likely to read at grade level.
· By grade 6, regular attendance is a predictor of high school completion.
· By grade 9, regular attendance is a better predictor of graduation rates than test scores.
· Students who attend daily are less likely to fall behind in school.
· Concerns with school attendance may indicate other challenges in a student’s life.
· Regular school attendance is an important life skill on the path to graduation and future employment.
Scholastic Book Fair Update: We want to express our sincere gratitude for your support in making our Book Fair a success! Thanks to your generous contributions, we sold almost $5,000 worth of books, raising $1700 for our school. These funds will be used to purchase new, popular, and high-quality resources for our learning commons. Be on the lookout for these exciting new titles coming home with your students in the New Year! A special thank you goes to all the volunteers from our school community. Their hard work and dedication made this event possible, and we couldn’t have done it without them.
Kindergarten Registration: Kindergarten Registration for the 2026-27 school year begins January 12, 2026. For children to be eligible to register and attend kindergarten in September 2026 year, they must turn five years old on or before Dec. 31, 2026. When registering your child for school, there are several things you should consider. Our CBE Kindergarten Registration Guide can help answer many of your questions. Please be aware that registration is not first-come, first-served.
School Messenger and Text Messages – Opting in: Did you know that parents and guardians must opt-in to receive text/SMS messages, including emergency text messages, such as bus delays, through School Messenger.

Communication with Royal Oak School Teachers: We appreciate open dialogue with you as parents to support your child/ren’s educational experience here at Royal Oak School. Please be aware that if you are emailing a teacher during the school day, they may not have an opportunity to read your message until the end of the day as they are busy working with students. If you require a faster response, please call the front office for assistance. Additionally, please allow our teachers 24 hours (during the work week) to respond to your emails. If you are requesting a teacher to complete additional forms/ letters for doctors, pediatricians or counselors, they will need at least one week’s notice to do so. We appreciate your support in helping our teachers manage their workload and priorities.
Sincerely,
Michelle Ryskamp & Nadine Duque
