Dear Royal Oak School Families,
Wishing all of our families a wonderful Family Day long weekend! Just a reminder that there is no school on Monday, February 16, 2026. We hope you enjoy this extra time to relax, recharge, and spend time with the people who matter most.
ROS Stuff-a-Sock Warm-a-Heart: The Grade 2 team has started an inquiry into how we use our hands in different ways. As part of this learning, students are exploring what it means to “lend a hand” by leading a project in support of the Calgary Drop-In Centre. Their goal is to stuff 125 pairs of socks, one for every student in grade 2. Items will be collected at our school in each classroom, stuffed by the grade 2 students and donated to the Calgary Drop-In Centre. Donation collection will occur from February 9 – February 26. If you can even donate even one small item, it makes a difference. We will be collecting the following items:
· Toothbrushes
· Men’s and women’s underwear (new)
· Throat lozenges
· Hand warmers
· Gloves and mitts
· Razors
· Lip balm
· Tim Hortons gift cards
· Grocery store gift cards
· Reusable beverage containers
· Hats and toques
· Chocolate and candy
· Deodorant
· Mini hand lotions
· Vaseline
Thank you in advance for helping support this meaningful initiative and for encouraging student involvement.
New School Instagram Account: Follow us on our new Instagram account, royaloakschoolcbe to find out more about the amazing things happening at Royal Oak School.
CBE Student Code of Conduct: Part of our annual requirements is to apprise families and students of the CBE Student Code of Conduct. Administrative Regulation (AR) 6005 provides in-depth information about how these matters are managed within the CBE. Additionally, Royal Oak School has established a method of supporting students to work through these situations. In a K-grade 4 school, we hold the belief that we all make mistakes, that these mistakes do not make us bad people, and those mistakes are opportunities for learning. It is extremely important to distinguish the behaviour from the person. For more on our Code of Conduct visit our Royal Oak School webpage. For more on CBE Student Discipline Administrative Regulation visit www.cbe.ab.ca
Student Assessment and Reporting: It’s that time of year again when families receive written feedback regarding their child’s progress at school. Report cards will be viewable online for Royal Oak School students beginning Tuesday, February 24, 2026. Report cards are one of several mechanisms that teachers use to communicate student progress along with formalized processes such as parent-teachers conferences. Additionally, teachers informally communicate student achievement through such means as email, phone calls, or face-to-face communication with families. Taken together, ongoing communication is vital to ensure student success. Ongoing communication supports students and families in building an understanding of individual student achievement over the course of the reporting period, so the information communicated in the report card is both expected and easily understood. Should you have questions or comments about your child’s progress or information contained within their report card, please connect with your child’s teacher. Please note that our next round of school conferences will occur on March 19 and 20, 2026.
Lunar New Year: February 17 marks Lunar New Year, a significant cultural celebration observed by many communities across Canada and around the world. Within CBE, our schools reflect a rich diversity of languages, traditions, and lived experiences, and this occasion offers a meaningful opportunity to continue fostering welcoming, caring, respectful, and safe learning environments for all. Often referred to as the Spring Festival, Chinese New Year, Tết (Vietnamese), or Seollal (Korean), Lunar New Year holds deep cultural and historical significance for many Southeast Asian communities and Canadians. It is one of the most widely recognized and celebrated events globally. As we welcome the Year of the Horse, we invite students, families, and staff to celebrate through meaningful connections and conversations. To all who are observing—we wish you a joyful, healthy, and prosperous Lunar New Year!
Wishing a Peaceful Ramadan to Our Families Who Observe: The month of February will see the beginning of Ramadan for Muslims around the world. This sacred month is a meaningful time of reflection, compassion, generosity, and gratitude for the many CBE families and communities who observe it. With an estimated start date of February 17, Ramadan marks a month‑long period of spiritual commitment, community connection, and acts of kindness. It also offers our school community an important opportunity to deepen understanding and honour the diverse traditions, experiences, and practices of our Muslim students, staff, and families. We extend our warm wishes to all who are preparing to observe Ramadan. May this month bring peace, reflection, and meaningful connection.
Alberta Education Assurance Survey: Each year Alberta Education sends a survey to all parents and legal guardians of students in grades 4, 7 and 10 to gather important information on the quality of education provided by school authorities and their schools. This year’s survey information from Alberta Education should already have been sent via email from CBE School Improvement to our grade 4 families. We kindly ask that you complete this survey by March 6, 2026.
Sincerely,
Michelle Ryskamp & Nadine Duque
Principal & Assistant Principal, Royal Oak School
