Dear Royal Oak School Families,
Long Weekend: A reminder that students have an extra-long weekend ahead. There is no school this coming Thursday and Friday due to Teachers’ Convention and Monday, February 16th is Family Day. We hope that you enjoy this extra time with your children, playing some games, reading favourite books, snuggling on the couch, or getting outside and enjoying the fresh air.
February is Kindness Month at Royal Oak School, and we’re excited to celebrate caring and connection within our school community. We began the month with a Red Shirt Day, followed by Random Acts of Kindness Weeks, featuring daily announcements shared by members of our Student Advisory Committee. We’ll also mark Valentine’s Day and conclude with Pink Shirt Day, reinforcing the importance of kindness, inclusion, and respect for all.
ROS Stuff-a-Sock Warm-a-Heart: The Grade 2 team has started an inquiry into how we use our hands in different ways. As part of this learning, students are exploring what it means to “lend a hand” by leading a project in support of the Calgary Drop-In Centre. Their goal is to stuff 125 pairs of socks, one for every student in grade 2. Items will be collected at our school in each classroom, stuffed by the grade 2 students and donated to the Calgary Drop-In Centre. Donation collection will occur from February 9 – February 26. If you can even donate even one small item, it makes a difference. We will be collecting the following items:
· Toothbrushes
· Men’s and women’s underwear (new)
· Throat lozenges
· Hand warmers
· Gloves and mitts
· Razors
· Lip balm
· Tim Hortons gift cards
· Grocery store gift cards
· Reusable beverage containers
· Hats and toques
· Chocolate and candy
· Deodorant
· Mini hand lotions
· Vaseline
Thank you in advance for helping support this meaningful initiative and for encouraging student involvement.
Valentine’s Day: We have reached the middle point of the school year and with that, Valentine's Day is just around the corner. We would like to keep a low-key approach to this day and keep things focused on friendship, belonging, and kindness. On this day, our teachers will find a way to make connections to curriculum and learning as it relates to each grade grouping. If students choose to bring in Valentines for others, we ask that they do so for all classmates, so as not to leave anyone out. We also ask that you do not send in any candy, food treats or gifts
Developing Independence - Lunch Independence:
Please help your child practice opening lunch containers and food packages at home. Being able to manage their lunch independently at school builds confidence and reduces frustration. Consistency and practice help children feel successful and capable.
New School Instagram Account: Follow us on our new Instagram account, royaloakschoolcbe to find out more about the amazing things happening at Royal Oak School.
Alberta Education Assurance Survey: Each year Alberta Education sends a survey to all parents and legal guardians of students in grades 4, 7 and 10 to gather important information on the quality of education provided by school authorities and their schools. This year’s survey information from Alberta Education should already have been sent via email from CBE School Improvement to our grade 4 families. We kindly ask that you complete this survey by March 6, 2026.
Report Cards will be viewable through your MyCBE account beginning February 24th. Paper copies of report cards will not be sent home. If you have questions regarding the content in your child’s report card, please contact your child’s teacher. If you have questions regarding access to your child’s report card, please contact the school office at 403-777-6279 during regular business hours. Please note, Kindergarten report cards will look a little different than for our grade 1 to 4 students. In February, progress in only ELAL and Math will be communicated to parents / legal guardians via the report card through both indicators and comments. In June, progress in all discipline areas will be shared through indicators and comments.
CBE 2026-2027 School Calendar: The 2026-2027 CBE instructional calendar has been approved and released. Please be aware that the first day of school is Monday, Aug. 31, 2026. Please access the calendar using this link.
Kindergarten Registration: Kindergarten Registration for the 2026-27 school year begins January 12, 2026. For children to be eligible to register and attend kindergarten in September 2026 year, they must turn five years old on or before Dec. 31, 2026. When registering your child for school, there are several things you should consider. Our CBE Kindergarten Registration Guide can help answer many of your questions. Please be aware that registration is not first-come, first-served.
Sincerely,
