Dear Royal Oak School Families,
Did you know that Tuesday, January 27th is Family Literacy Day in Alberta? The entire week of January 26 to February 2 is actually Family Literacy Week. What a great time to snuggle up with a great book with your child! We look forward to hearing about the ‘great reads’ occurring at home. Did you know that reading with your child each day is one of the most impactful ways to support their learning and development. Shared reading builds language and vocabulary, strengthens comprehension, and fosters a love of learning that extends across all subject areas. Just 10–15 minutes of reading together—talking about the story, asking questions, and making connections—helps develop focus, confidence, and critical thinking skills. Your time and engagement make a lasting difference. Please check out this CBE website for more information and resources.
Developing Independence: Packing and Unpacking Backpacks
Allowing children to pack and unpack their own backpacks supports organization and responsibility. With regular practice, children learn what they need for school and how to prepare themselves. These small, consistent tasks strengthen independence and learning habits.
Kindergarten Registration: Kindergarten Registration for the 2026-27 school year begins January 12, 2026. For children to be eligible to register and attend kindergarten in September 2026 year, they must turn five years old on or before Dec. 31, 2026. When registering your child for school, there are several things you should consider. Our CBE Kindergarten Registration Guide can help answer many of your questions. Please be aware that registration is not first-come, first-served.
Report Cards will be viewable through your MyCBE account beginning February 24th. Paper copies of report cards will not be sent home. If you have questions regarding the content in your child’s report card, please contact your child’s teacher. If you have questions regarding access to your child’s report card, please contact the school office at 403-777-6279 during regular business hours.
Please note, Kindergarten report cards will look a little different than for our grade 1 to 4 students. In February, progress in only ELAL and Math will be communicated to parents / legal guardians via the report card through both indicators and comments. In June, progress in all discipline areas will be shared through indicators and comments.
CBE 2026-2027 School Calendar: The 2026-2027 CBE instructional calendar has been approved and released. Please be aware that the first day of school is Monday, Aug. 31, 2026. Please access the calendar using this link.
Sincerely,
Michelle Ryskamp & Nadine Duque
