Dear Royal Oak School Families,

Our Walk, Bike & Roll to School Day on May 28th was a fantastic success! It was incredible to see so many of our students choosing active ways to travel to school—whether walking, biking, scootering, or rolling. The energy and enthusiasm brought a wonderful sense of community while also supporting healthy, active living and helping to reduce traffic around the school. A heartfelt thank you goes out to all of our volunteers and Mrs.Weber who generously gave their time and support to make this event run so seamlessly.

Bike Safety Reminder for Our School Community: As the weather warms up, many of our students are choosing to walk or bike to school. We are excited to see students staying active. During our recent Walk, Bike and Roll to School Day, we also noticed that as a community we need to revisit important bike laws and safety expectations. Safety must always come first, so please take a moment to review these important bike safety reminders and local expectations with your child.

·       Wear a Helmet — Every Ride: Wearing a properly fitted helmet is one of the most effective ways to prevent serious head injuries. Helmets are required for young riders and strongly recommended for all cyclists. Please ensure your child’s helmet fits snugly and is fastened before heading out.

·       Walk Bikes on School-Sidewalk Areas: For everyone’s safety, students must dismount and walk their bikes on sidewalks and pathways leading directly to the school grounds. These areas can be busy with pedestrians, and walking bikes helps prevent collisions.

·       Pedestrians Always Have the Right of Way: Bicycles must yield to pedestrians at all times. Students should be reminded to slow down, be alert, and give space to those walking, especially in crowded areas around the school.

·       Walk Bikes Across Crosswalks: When crossing the street at a crosswalk, students should dismount and walk their bikes across. This ensures better visibility and helps drivers anticipate movement safely.

·       Let’s Work Together: By following these guidelines, we can help keep all members of our school community safe. Parents and guardians, please reinforce these habits at home. Safe routes and respectful riding make a big difference. Thank you for helping us promote a safe and healthy school environment. Please also refer to the City of Calgary bike safety and bylaws link.

Sports Day is coming next week! We’re excited to celebrate our annual Sports Day on Friday, June 5th from 10:30 AM – 12:00 PM—a special event our students look forward to all year! It’s always a highlight of the school calendar, filled with fun, teamwork, laughter, and school spirit. We’re keeping our fingers crossed for beautiful weather so everyone can fully enjoy the day outdoors! To make this event a success, we rely on the support of our amazing parent community. We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to help bring the day to life—whether it’s assisting with setup, running activity stations, helping with take-down, or distributing treats to students afterward. Your time and energy truly make a difference in creating a memorable experience for our students. We can’t do it without you! Please consider volunteering for this fun and rewarding event:
