Dear Royal Oak School Families,

It has been wonderful to finally enjoy some beautiful spring weather, with teachers and students taking full advantage of the sunshine and warmer temperatures throughout the school day. We are looking forward to another busy and exciting week at ROS filled with engaging learning opportunities, special events, and school-wide experiences for our students. As you plan ahead, please remember that there will be no school for students on Friday, May 15 and Monday, May 18. We hope our families enjoy the long weekend together!

Earth Rangers Assembly: We are excited to welcome Earth Rangers to ROS School on Monday, May 11 for two special assemblies! This year’s presentation is styled like a fast-paced game show where students will team up to answer questions, make eco-decisions, and tackle environmental challenges. With audience participation, storytelling, live animals, and plenty of surprises, students are sure to have a blast while learning important science concepts connected to conservation, protecting habitats, and caring for the environment. We look forward to this engaging and memorable learning experience for all of our students!

ROS 2nd Annual Day of Design: We are excited for our 2nd Annual Day of Design at ROS on Thursday, May 14! Throughout the day, all grade 1-4 students will be engaged in designing, creating, prototyping, engineering, building, and making as we bring design thinking to life across the whole school simultaneously. This year’s Day of Design connects directly to our school-wide inquiry question: How do we live and learn well together? Classes will respond to this prompt in a variety of creative and meaningful ways connected to their curriculum and learning goals. The morning will be dedicated to imagining, planning, designing, and building, while the afternoon will focus on sharing our learning, visiting other classrooms, and reflecting on the design process and the ideas created throughout the day. We look forward to seeing the creativity, collaboration, problem-solving, and innovation that emerge as our students learn together through hands-on experiences!

Planning for Next Year: This week, we finalize our budget for the 2026-2027 school year. Currently, we are planning to staff conservatively based on a projected enrollment of 534 students.  We are planning for two AM and two PM kindergarten classes, four grade 1 classes, five classes each of grade 2, grade 3 and grade 4.  We will continue to have a part-time Physical Education teacher and a full-time music teacher. As student numbers change over the coming months, we must remain flexible and have several other scenarios planned in the event we need to make changes to our classroom configurations before the end of August.

Class List Planning for 2026-27: In the upcoming weeks, we will begin the thoughtful process of creating class lists for the 2026-27 school year. Please know that significant time, collaboration, and careful consideration go into this process each year. As teachers and the administrative team work together to build classes, we strive to create balanced learning environments that support the success and well-being of all students. A variety of factors are considered, including students’ learning needs, social and emotional dynamics, gender balance, and overall classroom complexity. Due to the possibility of staffing changes that can occur in June, classes are not initially formed around specific teachers. Instead, our focus is on creating well-balanced classrooms that best support the range of student needs across the grade level. Teacher assignments are finalized once staffing is confirmed. Our goal is to create classes where all students can learn, grow, and thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. Because of the many factors involved in this process, the many students in our school, changes in student enrollment over the summer months, and possible staffing changes, class placements are not shared with families until late August. Should you feel there is a particular educational situation the school is not already aware of regarding your child’s placement for next year, please contact your child’s current teacher so this can be noted.
