Dear Royal Oak School Families,
School Conferences: School Conferences are scheduled for this coming Thursday November 28 and Friday November 29. Nov. 28 is a regular school day for students. Nov 29 there is no school for all students. The booking system will open to parents at 4:00pm on Thursday, November 20th and will close on Thursday, November 27th at 8:00am. To book a School Conference, please login to your MyCBE/PowerSchool parent account and click the link for School Conferences.
Teachers look forward to this opportunity to communicate openly about student learning, especially with respect to your child's areas of strength and areas of growth. We also see this as an opportunity to build and sustain respectful relationships that allow both parties to share information and develop strategies to support student success. These 15-minute conferences are important for families to attend, along with your child, as they form part of the ongoing communication regarding student progress throughout the year. Please note that if you ever have questions about your child’s learning, we invite you to contact your child’s teacher directly – communication is not just at conference time. Due to labour action in October, teachers will be speaking to a more limited body of student learning evidence than typically in November.
Scholastic Book Fair: The Scholastic book fair return to Royal Oak School this week! It will be held during conferences on Thursday, November 27 and Friday, November 28. This is a fantastic opportunity to explore new and bestselling titles right here at our school. Best of all, every purchase made at the fair supports our school and encourages a love for reading among our students! The fair hours are Thursday 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm and Friday 8:00 am to 12:30 pm. We look forward to seeing you there and thank you for your support in fostering a love for reading in our school community.
Volunteers are needed for the book fair. A valid police clearance and updated annual volunteer form will be required. Please sign-up here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/60B0A4FA9AE2CA5F94-60180187-book
Updated Report Cards for Semester 1: With the disruption of student learning due to labour action, the CBE has adjusted the reporting period for semester 1. This has been shifted from January 30 to February 24, 2026.
Wonder Hours are Coming! On Friday, December 12, 2025, we will hold our first of six Wonder Hours at Royal Oak School. Our goals for Wonder Hour are to connect students across grades, help our staff to get to know all our children, and help students discover their passions at a younger age. Wonder Hour provides students with voice, choice, and meaningful opportunities to explore different interests alongside staff who share similar passions. There will be 23 different activities offered where students will be learning, creating, and exploring with students from Kindergarten to Grade 4. Students will be placed in a group from one of their top choices of activities. They will have the opportunity to explore three different activities for Wonder Hour throughout the rest of the school year.
Supporting a Love of Reading: How are you supporting a love of reading in your family? How can you make time every day to read aloud with your child? As part of the Silver Springs School community, we all have a role in supporting readers. Children who learn to love reading will learn more and read more. Silver Springs teachers are committed to reading aloud each day to their students. For parents, finding time to read aloud may feel like a sacrifice or nuisance. It requires commitment and patience, but it is worth every minute… Watch this video from Calgary Reads: Reading Aloud Builds Brains and Bonds
Sincerely,
Michelle Ryskamp
