Dear Royal Oak School Families,

The staff and I were so happy to welcome your children to school on Tuesday morning. With their return, the joy of seeing friends and excitement for the new year was heartwarming. As a staff, we are looking forward to the possibilities and opportunities that this year will bring.

Thank you so much for entrusting your children’s education to us at Royal Oak School.  We have an incredibly strong, connected, and committed staff. I am confident that we can work together on behalf of your children, to provide them with opportunities for success. At this time of year, our teachers are busy getting to know your children, their strengths, interests, and areas for growth. By doing so, they will meet your children where they are at and move their learning forward throughout the year ahead

Royal Oak School Meet-the-Teacher / Open House: As a way to connect with all our families, we are hosting a Meet- the-Teacher night / Open House on Thursday, September 18th, 2025. You will have the opportunity to see your child’s classroom and connect with your child’s teacher.

School Council Meeting: Our first School Council Meeting is on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, at 6:30 – 8:30pm. All parents are welcome to attend these meetings. In doing so, you can hear more about what is happening in the school, as well as be part of the conversation and work that our council volunteers take on to support our school. Our meetings will be held in-person in the school staffroom. If you are unable to attend in-person, please use this Teams link so that you can join us from home. Join the meeting now

Royal Oak School Council: The Royal Oak School Council invites students and their families to a Welcome Back Picnic-in-the-Park on Friday, September 12, 2025, from 5:00 to 8:00pm at the Rocky Ridge Royal Oak Community Association (9000 Royal Oak Way, NW). Bring your dinner and blanket OR purchase your food from YYCFoodTrucks and enjoy a picnic with all of your friends from Royal Oak School. Don’t forget to enter their draw for a prize! Calgary Fire and Police Services may be stopping by for a visit. This event is rain or shine. There is no cost to attend. Please note that there are no bathrooms onsite. If you have questions, please email: ROSchoolCouncil@gmail.com

Terry Fox Run on Friday, September 19: The students at ROS will be participating in the 45th annual Terry Fox Run on Friday, September 19th at 11:00am. This is an AM kindergarten attendance day.  Our PM Kindergarten students are welcome to join the run but must be accompanied by a parent. This year’s slogan is "FINISH IT". The Terry Fox Foundation supports a variety of different research projects that fund many types of cancer such as lung, breast, ovarian, colorectal, pediatric, prostate, brain and blood. Students have been learning about Terry and his journey across Canada to raise money and awareness. We have been discussing many of the qualities that Terry embodied such as perseverance, courage, empathy and integrity. We encourage you to chat with your family about Terry Fox and why he is considered a true Canadian Hero. On run day, your child should be properly prepared to be active outside for approximately 45 minutes. The run will be cancelled if the weather is too cold, too rainy, or if the smoke index is too high. We will move our activities into the gym so that all the students will still be able to run for Terry. Additionally, students will not be given stickers to paste on their clothing this year. We appreciate the feedback about all the troubles they caused last year, and we have small temporary tattoos instead.

Supporting the Terry Fox Foundation: If you are able, here is the link to donate to Royal Oak School’s efforts (online donations will receive a tax receipt) https://schools.terryfox.ca/97897. You may also send a cash donation to the school that will be collected daily by classroom teachers and Ms. Weber. You may also wish to purchase a Terry Fox T-Shirt online at www.terryfoxschools.org. Help spread awareness about the importance of Terry's journey by talking about Terry and the fight against cancer. By participating, we not only support this worthy cause but also build school spirit and teach our students about determination. Thank you so much, please reach out with any questions you may have to Ms. Weber at kkweber@cbe.ab.ca

Terry Fox Run Volunteers Needed: We would appreciate parent volunteer help with this event. Your presence will provide safety and motivation for our runners. Parents will be outside, standing at strategic points along the route to help the children along. Please use this Sign-Up Genius link to register as a volunteer for this event. A current valid police security clearance is required as well as a current year annual volunteer registration (to be completed online through School Engage). If you do not yet have a valid police clearance, we will not be able to process the request in time for this event. Please contact Mrs. Milne in our front office if you have further questions.  Please sign-up using this link: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/60B0A4FA9AE2CA5F94-58396474-terry
