Welcome Back Everyone and School Messenger Messages

Please forgive this long message at the start of the year

The energy in the building these first two days was incredible and it was so great to see the kids again; it is amazing how quickly they grow!  We look forward to a great year of learning and to meeting parents on Sept. 21 during meet the teacher night.

This weekly school messenger message is intended to keep you informed of some important dates and information as the year moves along.  If you know other parents who have not signed up to receive these messages, we ask that you please spread the word.  We will try to keep these as brief as possible.

School Messenger is a mass communication tool that allows schools to easily and securely send email, phone and text messages to parents/guardians of students in a particular grade, class, school or area. To receive all relevant messages from your child’s school, be sure to subscribe. If your contact information changes, please us.  Sign up here https://calgary.schoolmessenger.com/cbe_subscribe

Nut Aware School – PLEASE READ

We have several students at our school who have life threatening allergies to nuts and nut products.  We ask that you do NOT send any products for snacks or lunch that contain nuts for your child.  We thank you for your help with this critical step in keeping all our kids safe.

U R Strong School

Please see school messenger message for link to sign up or contact Mr. Hamby for the link

We are excited to announce that we are a U R Strong School!  This program will become part of our Health and Wellbeing curriculum for all grades at ROS.  The focus of this program is to teach students how to navigate friendship difficulties and build positive friendships.  Thanks to Parent Council for paying for this program.  As part of the membership fee, parents can also register for a U R Strong membership for free.  There are many resources that parents might find helpful in coaching their child through what can be some turbulent waters as students move through their school years.

Dear Parents,

URSTRONG’s whole-school friendship strategy has improved the social climate in schools around the world, connecting over a million kids, parents, and teachers with a common language of friendship. We are proud to be a URSTRONG School and are committed to empowering your children with friendship skills.

You are invited to take advantage of a FREE Parent Membership to access hundreds of resources – including an 8 session video series. This will allow you to learn the same language & strategies being taught in the classroom through the Friendology 101 curriculum. We hope that, as a URSTRONG Family, you will reinforce the important messages of empowerment, self-compassion, & kindness at home.

We believe that empowering our students with these skills will create a culture of kindness at our school and we hope that, together, we can support your children to have healthy, feel-good friendships.

School Contacts and Times:

Please refer to the following link should you need to get in touch with your child’s teacher: https://school.cbe.ab.ca/school/royaloak/about-us/contact/staff/pages/default.aspx

Please note that teachers’ days are very busy and they cannot take phone calls during the day.  The best way to contact them is via email and they will do their best to reply promptly.

Safety Around the School and Student Pick Up Drop Off

Please make sure that you are on the look out for kids when driving around the school.  Students are not always thinking about safety and we need the adults to be on “the watch.”

During peak hours, at drop off and pick up at the end of the day, parents should not enter the school parking lot unless you or your child has an injury that warrants it or you need to use the handicapped parking.  Please also lead by example and do not cut through the parking lot or J-Walk – please use the sidewalk.

Hug & Go

In the AM only, please note that the Hug & Go in front of the school is meant as a quick drop off where students can exit vehicles on the curb side and move to their entry doors.  This is not an area where you should be parking and leaving your car in the morning. Insert map attachment

Picking up students from school

If you are picking your child up early from school, please let the teacher and the office know in advance.  Just so you are aware, all CBE schools are required to have an emergency response plan to enact if students go missing.  This involves internal and external announcements, internal and external sweeps and phone parents and collaborating with emergency service if needed.  As you can imagine, heart rates quickly increase if a child is missing so please let us know your plans well in advance if possible.

Yellow School Bus Riders

If your child will not be riding the bus home at the end of the day, please let your teacher and the office know.  We would also ask that you please pick up your child from the line up by the parking lot entry doors.  This helps to minimize confusion during this hectic time of the day.

Thanks for your help with these important safety issues.

School Council

Monday, Sept. 11 – 6:30 p.m. in person and virtual - details to follow
