Royal Oak School Council would like to acknowledge the contributions of a dedicated volunteer. Lissa S. has had an active role on Council for the past five years, helping to plan and coordinate special events. As this year will be her last, Council would like to share more about Lissa and some of the ways she has helped build community at Royal Oak School. We hope her story inspires others to get involved. Thank you, Lissa, for all of your hard work!
Volunteer Spotlight
– Lissa S, Special Events Volunteer
- What grade(s) is your child/children at ROS? My daughter is in grade 4 which means this is my last year at ROS. My son previously attended ROS and is now at Pratt.
- What motivates you to be involved with the ROS Council? When I first attended a Council meeting, it was to suggest an idea for a Buddy Bench for the playground – a specially designated bench to promote making new friends for kids who don’t have someone to play with at recess. The next time I came back to Council, they were talking about getting it installed! I realized this was a group of people who got things done and made a difference, and I wanted to be a part of it!
- What are you passionate about when it comes to school community? I love building community and events are such a great way to engage families who may be new to the community, city or even country, and to help them build a network of friends and support.
- Any other personal details you would like to share! My favourite event, hands down, is Literacy Month – a month dedicated to getting kids excited about reading. I am absolutely thrilled when talking to students about what they are reading, or hearing from families about their excitement for Read-a-Thon.

Program Spotlight
– Special Events Team
- What is the Special Events Team? A group of volunteers on Council who take turns initiating, leading, and organizing various special events for ROS students and families. Events are carried out with the support of Council and volunteers. Involvement is flexible and volunteers can be a part of events they are passionate about or may have the schedule for.
- How does the Special Events team help build community at ROS? Many ROS Council events celebrate bringing students and families together such as school dances, Library Night at the CPL, Family Game Night, Welcome Back Picnic, etc. Other events, like the Read-a-Thon or Fresh Fruit Friday, tend to be more student-focused.
- How can people get involved? Come to a Council meeting or email Council about opportunities – and if you see me around, come and say hi! I will help you to get involved with this great group of ROS volunteers.
