Did you know that as a parent or caregiver at Royal Oak School you are part of School Council? At Calgary Board of Education, all parents and caregivers of students are considered members of school councils. This means that everyone is welcome to participate and share input in ways they have capacity for.

Here are some of the ways ROS Council – including all ROS families and caregivers – helped positively shape students’ experiences at Royal Oak School this year.

Ten Ways ROS Parents & Caregivers Contributed in 2025-26

  1. Organized vendors and volunteers for eight Fun Lunch lunches and five Fun Snacks. Purchases and donations made through Healthy Hunger raised $4,000 this year for ROS learning needs and supplies.
  2. Offered ROS families opportunities to attend events like the fall welcome back picnic, family boardgame night, winter & spring school dances, free pancake breakfast (in partnership with William D. Pratt), and year-end carnival.
  3. Encouraged ROS students to read 209,773 minutes during read-a-thon. Additional literacy month activities included a used book drive and sale, dress up day, and Crowfoot library event. In total, over $2,600 was raised for the school through literacy month. Thank you to all families and caregivers who participated and/or donated!
  4. Offered each ROS student a piece of fresh fruit on three Fridays throughout the school year. Donations from families and caregivers were also used to stock the student snack bin in the office and to buy treats for students at school-wide events.
  5. Purchased learning resources for math literacy luggage including books, games, and cards that ROS students may borrow from the library.
  6. Showed appreciation for ROS teachers and staff by purchasing two meals, drinks, and snacks for evening-based school events (E.g. meet the teacher, learning conferences). Volunteers donated or prepared dishes for the staff appreciation potluck. At Christmas, teachers and staff also received coffee/tea/hot chocolate and goodies.
  7. Recruited volunteers for school-wide events such as the Terry Fox run, jacket racket (used winter clothing donation drive), school photos, the Scholastic Book Fair, Nature Play residencies in the fall and spring, and sports day.
  8. Promoted school community by organizing the sale of ROS Spirit Wear to students and staff, launching the ROS Council Instagram page, submitting articles to the community newsletter, attending two community of school council meetings, and entering volunteers into a monthly $20 gift card draw.
  9. Secured a $500 grant through Alberta School Council Engagement. Funds will be used for parenting and caregiver educational resources and a presentation. Also secured a $1,000 grant for the Stampede breakfast from the Ward Community Event Fund.
  10. Organized volunteers in the fall and winter to assist with Hug & Go drop-off lane and parking safety. In the spring, reintroduced use of traffic cones to help improve pedestrian visibility and safety in ROS crosswalks.

Thank you so much to all ROS families & caregivers for their support of ROS Council activities! Together we helped make ROS a better place for students, staff, and volunteers this school year. Wishing all ROS families and caregivers a nice summer. See you in the fall!
